The Reading Settings group relates to front page displays and feed output options. It contains the following items:

  • Blog Pages Show at Most: How many blog pages you want to show, at most.
  • Syndication Feeds Show the Most Recent: Determine the number of recent syndication feeds to show.
  • For Each Article in a Feed, Show: Determines whether to show full or summary text in a feed.
  • Encoding for Pages and Feeds: The character encoding you write your blog in – UTF-8 is default and recommended.

The Writing Settings group relates to some formatting and feed input options. It contains the following items:

  • Size of the post box: How many posts you want your post list to show
  • Formatting: Options for converting emoticons to graphics and automatic correction of invalidly nested XHTML
  • Default Post Category: The post category that should automatically be used if one is not selected
  • Default Link Category: The link category that should automatically be used if one is not selected

Remote publishing – used to post to WordPress from a desktop blogging client or remote website that uses the Atom Publishing protocol or one of the XML-RPC publishing interfaces

  • Atom Publishing Protocol: Enables the Atom Publishing Protocol
  • XML-RPC: Enables the WordPress, Movable Type, MetaWeblog and Blogger XML-RPC publishing protocols

The General Settings group relates to basic display and time grouping items shown on your blog. It contains the following items:

  • Blog Title: The display title of your blog.
  • Tagline: What your blog is about.
  • E-mail Address: The e-mail address where you want site generated e-mail to go to.
  • Membership: Toggle box which, when enabled, only allows registered, logged in users to comment
  • Timezone: The time zone that you are in. Note: This setting must be manually updated for Daylight Savings Time
  • Date Format: Determines the date format to show (such as December 18, 2008)
  • Time Format: Determines the time format to show (standard or military)
  • Week Starts On: Select the day your week starts on

There are many different available Settings that can be configured in WordPress.  These settings can affect everything from what your blog site displays as a title, to how commentary is handled, to whether or not your site is visible to the public or not.
