Student Survival

Life can be full of stressors. As a student, you are expected to go to all your classes, earn satisfying grades, complete all homework on time, keep your mental health steady, workout occasionally to stay fit, eat well, maybe participate in sorority and fraternity events, and also earn money to pay for your bills by gaining jobs inside or outside of your university. This is A LOT! Doing the best you can to juggle all of those expectations can start to negatively impact your body, mind, and daily life.

Stress Relief in the form of Aromatherapy

Aromatherapy.com claims aromatherapy first made an appearance in 1937. French chemist, Gottefosse, invented the word in an incident involving burning himself, where he was able to use natural remedies to heal his wounds. This sparked the interest of a French surgeon who later started to experiment with the effects of essential oils, helping heal soldiers in World War II.

Benefits of Herbal-Based Extracts

Healthline.com stated “essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that retain the natural smell and flavor, or “essence,” of their source”. These herbal-based extracts not only produce healing effects but can aid in reducing anxiety, detoxifying your body, boosting your energy and immune system, and helping with your skin, sleep, and memory. Turkish authors and Professors in the Department of Pharmacognosy, K. Hüsnü, Can Başer, and Fatih Demirci wrote a book titled Chemistry of Essential Oils. In there breakdown of what an essential oil truly is, they also state “essential oils comprise an important bioresource for renewable natural products”.

Real-Life Benefits

As someone who deals with chronic anxiety and depression, I have always enjoyed the use of essential oils. My aunt first introduced me to the essence of lavender. Stated in nih.gov, “Lavender is native to the Mediterranean region. It was used in ancient Egypt as part of the process for mummifying bodies”. Lavender is antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, which means it is great for getting rid of bug bites or treating minor wounds. It also contains uses for helping decrease anxiety, fatigue, and depression. Because of this, I continued to see a decrease in my body’s tension, a boost in my mood, clearer skin, and a more calm and peaceful spirit. It is nice to have a remedy that I can pull out and use anytime and anywhere, without feeling self-conscious. I wasn’t stepping out of rooms to fight my uneasiness but instead pulling out a small oil that could absorb right into my skin, make me smell fresh and alive, revitalizing my senses giving me confidence, peace, and happiness.

To Infinity And Beyond

Now, a lot of my friends enjoy the use of these healing oils as well. Aromatherapy is one of the most popular ways my own friends love to enjoy the benefits of essential oils. Not only can they use the oils on their skin like me, but they can diffuse them throughout the air around themselves, inhale them, and use them in and around their own households.

Instead of going through your day stressed, tired, and tense, try the use of these wonderful oils to make your days naturally brighter and happier!

A Happy You is A Healthy You.
