In the United States, all marine mammals are protected under the U.S. Marine Mammal Protection Act, and some species may also be protected under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. For research conducted under U.S. sponsorship, the U.S. Antarctic Conservation Act also applies to any research in Antarctica. Approaching protected animals, capturing animals and conducting research on animals requires specific permits issued by the responsible federal agency. In addition, all research projects on vertebrates require permits by Institutional Animal Care and Use Committees, as required under the U.S. Animal Welfare Act.
