Implicit Bias What are They and Do I Have them?
Implicit bias can be found anywhere whether it’s in your daily life or in your company. It is important to understand implicit bias especially in the work place. What makes implicit bias hard is the fact that they are attitudes or stereotypes that affect your thinking in an unconscious manner. Meaning that you may not know that you have an implicit bias.
Test Results
The test that I chose to take was the Gender-Career IAT test. After taking this my results told me that I have little to no automatic association between Female and Male with Career and Family. My results also told me that I only had a 24% strong automatic association of male with career and female with family, 32% moderate automatic association of male with career and female with family, and 19% slight automatic association of male with career and female with family. I was honestly a little bit surprised that this was my result I would have thought that my implicit bias on this category would be higher because of the time period that I grew up in.
Selection Process and Implicit Bias
During the selection process I can definitely see implicit bias messing up the reliability or validity. If someone is trying to select people, their implicit bias can get in the way of choosing the right candidate. This is something that you have to be very aware of, so everyone has the same chance of a job, and it is based off of their knowledge and experience and know who they are or what they look like.
Combat Against Implicit Bias
Some things that you can do to combat implicit bias is perspective taking. This means to imagine the situation from someone else’s point of view. That why you can see if you have any of those hidden implicit basis. Another good way to work on getting rid of implicit bias is getting to know people from different groups. That way you can better understand different people.
