OSU to host events celebrating hands-on learning and maker culture April 14-15

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon State University will host The Co., a two-day event celebrating hands-on learning and maker culture, April 14-15 on the Corvallis campus.

“SEA Through the Eyes of an Artist” will take place from 9:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. April 14 at Furman Hall. The fourth-annual Corvallis Maker Fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 15 in the Memorial Union Ballroom and the Student Experience Center Plaza. Both events are free and open to the public.

“Maker” culture is a popular movement honoring craftsmanship and technology and the sharing of knowledge, skills and resources. The CO. event offers the OSU community and the public an opportunity to collaborate, innovate and create. The event also provides a forum for teaching the value of hands-on learning in classrooms from kindergarten through college.

“SEA Through the Eyes of an Artist” is a new event this year, hosted by the College of Education in conjunction with The CO. and SPARK, OSU’s year-long celebration of the arts and science. All events are free and open to the public. The schedule is:

  • 9:30 a.m. to noon: Activities for K-12 students including a Muddy Creek project demonstration; SMILE (Science and Math Investigative Learning Experiences);StreamWebs; Art at Sea; and Storytime with Judy Li. Furman Hall.
  • 1-2 p.m.: Keynote speaker, Brownwyn Bevan of the University of Washington College of Education, who will deliver an interactive keynote presentation on makerspace research in the Learning Innovation Center, Room 100.
  • 2-5 p.m.: Activities for the OSU community, including an earthquake/tsunami activity station; an “interpret your research” competition for graduate students to demonstrate their dissertation or capstone projects through music, dance, painting or other art forms; and happy hour with Bevan. Furman Hall.
  • 5-9 p.m.: Activities for families and the community, including a COSIA activity station. Furman Hall.

Other activities include an arts and science geocaching quest throughout the OSU campus; panels to inspire women and girls to enter STEM fields, presented by the campus groups Women in Science and Women in Engineering; and a show focused on arts and science presented by the Corvallis Public Library. At Saturday’s Maker Fair, attendees can talk to experts in the arts, crafts, technology, and sciences and leave with unique souvenirs such as Michael Boonstra’s laser-etched cedar selfies. Visitors can also tie flies with OSU Fly Fishing, experience virtual reality gaming with Solid Fuel Studios, help build a Mars lander based on the actual Viking design plans with the Viking Mars Mission Preservation and Education Team, learn basic programming concepts with the OSU Open Source Lab, find out about the process of creating pigments with the Mobile Color Lab and more
The CO. is organized by a team of OSU faculty, staff, and students and professionals from the Corvallis area. Lyla Houglum has served the State of Oregon and Oregon State University since 1985 as an Extension 4-H Youth Development Specialist, Extension Associate Director for Counties, Dean & Director of OSU Extension, Director of Special Initiatives, and Executive Director of the Western Extension Directors Association. Dr. Houglum is recognized by colleagues across the nation as a leader who has developed a state, regional, and national reputation. Lyla has served Extension clientele and led Extension programs for nearly 39 years. Prior to coming to Oregon State University she worked in Montana as a County Extension Agent.

Congratulations to Ana Gomez

Ana Gomez was honored as the recipient of the Frances Dancy Hooks Award at the Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Peace Breakfast on January 16, 2017.

In 1994, longtime civil rights activist, Frances Dancy Hooks spoke at Oregon State’s Celebration of Peace Breakfast. The first award in her honor was presented that year that would continue to recognize an OSU student, faculty or staff who exemplify Frances Dancy Hooks’ work: building bridges across cultures, showing courage in promoting diversity, and proudly “Walking the Talk.”

Congratulations Ana. This is a well deserved honor. Ana would like to acknowledge the families with which she works as she feels that their hard work and dedication is truly deserving of praise and recognition.

Incentive Program

Incentive Programs: The Research Office is launching two new Incentive Programs. Small Grants (SG). This program will support individual faculty research across OSU, and will support both the development of extramural grant proposal development and scholarly activities that advance SP3.0. The SGs will have two categories. Category 1. Individual grants will range from $15,000-$25,000 with a total program budget of about $80,000/y. Category 2. Individual grants will range from $3,000 – $7,000 with a total program budget of about $90,000. Large Program Development (LPD) grants program will stimulate major, transdisciplinary, extramurally-funded research programs by supporting multidisciplinary teams to work together to form new research cores at OSU that advance SP3.0. Scholarship on the rhetoric of science applies concepts developed in the humanities to the persuasive efforts of scientists. In this brownbag, they will introduce some rhetorical scholarship on the communication of scientists. Reviewing the take-home messages of a number of case studies, they will offer advice about what scientists should and should not do when engaging the public about their research.

2017 Mileage, Lodging, and Meal Per Diem Rate Changes


Business Affairs has changed the 2017 mileage reimbursement rate, as of 01/01/17, from $0.54 to $0.535 and TRES has been updated.

UABC has updated the mileage logs for 2017. Please see the attached link:

If you have not submitted your December mileage reimbursement, please keep using the 2016 mileage log. January mileage needs to be entered and submitted on the 2017 mileage log. Please chose the type of form that works best for you and is the appropriate year.

Lodging and Meals Per Diem:

Business Affairs has made some changes to travel reimbursement rates. In addition to changing the mileage reimbursement rate, the lodging per diem rates have been changed.

2017 Lodging Rates:
Low per diem: $132.00/night
High per diem: $214.00/night

Meal per diems have stayed the same as 2016:
Low per diem: $57/day or Breakfast $14.25, Lunch $14.25, & Dinner $28.50
High per diem: $68/day or Breakfast $17.00, Lunch $17.00, & Dinner $34.00

O&E Quarterly Conversation, November 18th

Oregon Tilth Partners with Oregon State University to Launch Organic Extension Program

CORVALLIS, Ore. – Oregon’s organic farmers will benefit from new research, education and outreach thanks to a new Oregon State University (OSU) Organic Extension program dedicated to building and sustaining organic agriculture—Oregon’s fastest-growing farm sector. Oregon Tilth, a Corvallis-based nonprofit organic certifier and advocate for sustainable agriculture, has pledged $100,000 in matching funds over four years to support the program. Oregon Tilth has provided $150,000 to OSU’s Small Farms Program since 2009.

OSU’s Center for Small Farms & Community Food Systems will use the money to develop research and educational programs and help pay the salary of Nick Andrews, now OSU’s first Organic Extension Agent.

“We are excited to support the launch of OSU’s Organic Extension Program with this important first step,” said Chris Schreiner, Oregon Tilth’s executive director. “It recognizes organic as an important sector of Oregon agriculture that OSU will be better able to serve through a dedicated program.”

Garry Stephenson, director of the OSU Center for Small Farms & Community Food Systems, said, “This is significant, yet we don’t plan to stop here. We envision an Organic Extension Program with four or more positions around Oregon, focused on different crop and livestock systems as well as local food system development.”

Nick Andrews, OSU’s Organic Extension Agent, said, “Not only does this new funding allow faculty like me to specialize, but we can aggregate and grow OSU’s work on organics – the most rapidly growing sector of agriculture – for bigger and broader benefit.” Organic research and Extension projects will initially focus on annual crops, but the scope of the program will increase to include perennial crops, livestock systems, local food systems and other topics as more Organic Extension agents come on board.

Oregon ranks sixth among U.S. states in the certified organic acreage, and fourth in farmgate sales, according to 2015 data from USDA. “We’re fortunate in Oregon to have favorable growing conditions for organic production,” said Stephenson. “And Oregonians are tremendously interested in local, sustainable food.”

Our mission to make our food system and agriculture biologically sound and socially equitable requires us to find practical ways to tackle big challenges. We advance this mission to balance the needs of people and planet through focus on core areas of certification, conservation, policy and the marketplace.

The OSU Center for Small Farms and Community Systems was established in the OSU College of Agricultural Sciences in 2013, building on two decades of the successful Extension Small Farms Program. The Center uses education, research, and collaboration to advance sustainable agriculture, community food systems, and economic progress for Oregon’s small farmers and ranchers.


Great Shake Out Drill

Join other OSU faculty, staff, and students in the Great Oregon Shake Out!

On October 20 at 10:20 am, join the rest of Oregon and the nation and Drop, Cover, and Hold-On for 60 seconds to simulate the response to an earthquake.

Participation is voluntary but encouraged. In previous years, several campus classes and organizations have:

  • Made participation a small group class project, to include a 5 minute research presentation
  • Made a class project to have students, wherever they are, encourage those around them to Drop, Cover, Hold-On (proof provided by videotaping the activity)
  • Prepared informational materials and distribute to staff/faculty/classmates
  • Planned an evacuation drill to high ground near Hatfield due to the tsunami threat

As part of the monthly OSU Emergency Preparedness Learning sessions, October’s fact sheet will review the response to earthquakes and other preparedness points – Great talking tips to present on 10/20, right before the Drop, Cover, and Hold-On event!

There will be a PowerPoint sent on Monday, October 17 that can be used in offices and classrooms to introduce the earthquake drill. It even has a 60 second timer to help with how long to run the drill.

Oregon is subjected to earthquakes daily, but the largest event forecasted has yet to occur within our life time. The Cascadia Subduction zone earthquake is forecasted to be a 9.0 or higher and to last for 5-7 minutes, followed by a 30-50 foot tsunami at the coast

Response to earthquakes is simple but important for everyone to perform correctly and automatically. When the shaking is felt, drop low to the ground, seek overhead cover to protect yourself from falling debris, and hold on to the cover so it does not move away from you. When the shaking has stopped, cautiously exit the building, watching for falling objects.

Call for Proposals: 2016-2017 Learning Innovation Grants

On behalf of the Office of the Vice Provost for Information Services, I am pleased to announce the opening of the call for proposals for the 2016-2017 Learning Innovation Grants.

In 2015-2016, $130,000 was awarded to support 16 Individual projects and nearly $300,000 was awarded to collaborative teams to support 3 Scaled projects. Consistent with last year, awards will be offered in two categories.

Individual Grants (up to $10,000)
10 to 15 individual grants will be awarded to faculty at the OSU Corvallis campus. These awards are intended to bring innovation to the learning experience by providing seed funding for pilot projects combining effective pedagogy with technology or other educational technology efforts.

These are one-time grants, not an ongoing service fund.

Scaled Grants (up to $100,000)
Scaled Grants will be awarded to multi-departmental teams at the OSU Corvallis campus who are launching new initiatives or expanding existing ones. Co-contributed resources of staff time and/or funds are expected, and a sustainability plan for maintaining the initiative should be included with the proposal. Deans need to review and actively support the project. Projects should directly contribute to student learning and experience: although research may be conducted on a funded project, the grant funds are not intended to support research itself.

Applications for Scaled Grants will be accepted in Fall 2016 and Winter 2017. (A separate RFP for Winter 2017 proposals will come out in January 2017.)
