M.S. Assistantship: Roosevelt elk population estimation – Oregon State University

Wanted: an individual interested in pursuing a Master’s of Science degree in Wildlife Science in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, under the supervision of Dr. Clinton Epps (, for a project evaluating non-invasive genetic sampling as a method for estimating Roosevelt elk populations in western Oregon. The ideal applicant would have excellent quantitative skills and an interest in statistics, modelling, and sample design, would be able to work successfully with collaborating scientists and technicians from Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife, and would be able to conduct field work in steep, isolated terrain if necessary. Familiarity with genetic data or laboratory analysis is helpful but not required.

Preferred starting date: September 16, 2017

Starting stipend: $1,911/month

Type of support: Student will be supported largely by a Graduate Research Assistantship (tuition, fee offsets, and stipend provided), with occasional terms supported by a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (tuition, fee offsets, and stipend provided).

Minimum qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in wildlife, ecology, biology, or other relevant field, valid driver’s license, and strong academic performance particularly in quantitative areas. GPA >3.0 required, >3.3 preferred (4.0 scale). GRE scores should be at least 50th percentile in each category.

Preferred qualifications: excellent quantitative skills and an interest in statistics, modelling, and sample design, experience using R, mark-recapture or similar population estimation methods, research experience, and experience with field work.
