This recruitment will be used to fill three positions in our Tigard office.

The Department of Consumer and Business Services (DCBS) is a progressive business regulatory state agency dedicated to the mission of protecting and serving Oregon’s consumers and workers while supporting a positive business climate. The department administers state laws and rules governing workers’ compensation, occupational safety and health, financial institutions, insurance companies and building codes. The department has consumer protection and education programs, offices, and ombudsmen to help consumers, injured workers, and businesses.
These positions are with the Oregon Occupational Safety and Health Division (Oregon OSHA). Oregon OSHA is responsible for assuring safe and healthful working conditions for Oregon workers through promulgation and enforcement of Occupational Safety and Health Regulations, and by providing education and consultation to employees and employers.
These positions are represented by the Service Employees International Union (SEIU).
Duties & Responsibilities
The successful candidates will conduct health evaluations and investigations, take enforcement action in a broad range of workplaces to ensure employer compliance with the Oregon Safe Employment Act, conduct technical training, and provide abatement assistance for employers and employees.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Four years of industrial hygiene program experience in a major industry;OR
  • A Bachelor’s degree with courses (forty-five credit hours or thirty-two semester hours) in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health, Chemistry, a physical or biological science, Ergonomics, or Industrial Engineering and one year of industrial hygiene program experience in a major industry;OR
  • An Associate’s degree in Industrial Hygiene and two years of industrial hygiene program experience in a major industry; OR

Graduate level courses in any of the above subject areas is desirable and may be substituted, on a credit-hour basis, for a portion of the required experience..

  • Strong problem solving skills, including the ability to assist other staff with problem solving
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse groups

  • Preference may be given to candidates who are fluent in Spanish

DRIVING RECORD CHECK

Requirements of a satisfactory driving record:
A driver having a satisfactory driving record is defined as a driver who has not been convicted or forfeited bail for any of the following offenses and infractions:

  • A major traffic offense in the last 24 months (examples include reckless driving, driving under the influence of intoxicants, failing to perform the duties of a driver, criminal driving while suspended or revoked, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and others),
  • A felony revocation of driving privileges, or felony or misdemeanor conviction resulting in driver license suspension within the last 24 months,
  • Three or more Class B traffic violations in the last 12 months,
  • A careless driving conviction in the last 12 months,
  • A Class A moving violation in the last 12 months (Class A is the most serious level of violation, e.g. going 30 miles over the speed limit).

CRIMINAL BACKGROUND CHECK
Employment will be contingent upon passing a criminal background check.

SPECIAL INFORMATION

  • Exposed to any and all physical/environmental safety and health conditions found in Oregon workplaces. May stand for long periods of time, walk over uneven surfaces, climb using ladders and stairs and bend and stoop.
  • Drives to workplaces within assigned area in a variety of weather conditions. Occasional out of state and overnight travel is required.
  • Works a flexible work schedule. May require after-hours work related activities such as speaking engagements, training sessions, or completion of an inspection. May be called upon to work nights, weekends and holidays with minimal notice.
  • May come in contact with irate, hostile or antagonistic people who may respond to the potential of an enforcement action with verbal abuse or threats of physical harm.
  • May come in contact with accident victims, their family members, and witnesses. May view accident victims, either on site, in a hospital or morgue and come in contact with victim’s family members.
