The first thing that stood out to me when reading about Hilton and why the employees like to work there is that the employees believe that the management is honest and ethical in their business practices. As we learned in the lecture, one of the HR functional areas is managing ethics. I think that working on the companies HP practice of ethics is a smart idea because not only do the employees look at that, but so do all the customers.

One HR practice that the employees of Pulralsight Inc. mentioned was they believed that management would only lay off people as a last resort. This falls under the HR practice of employee retention and engagement. It is a really important aspect that employees feel like they have security in their job. This can make employees focused on the job at hand and not worrying about when they are going to have to find another job.
83% of employees say this is a great place to work.
At EY, 90% of employees say they are offered training or development to further themselves professionally. This is another example of a very important HR practice of training and development. This is a great way to make employees feel like they have a purpose at the company they are working at and making sure they feel challenged. It’s also much easier to train current employees then hiring someone new that isn’t used to how the company works.
After reading about these different companies and reading the learning materials for this week, I would like to be the kind of manager that helps foster a community for the employees, is a leader, and a role model. By having the mindset that people matter will make the employees feel valued and part of a team. I think one of the hardest aspects of a manager is making sure that all of your employees are motivated. In the book “First, Break All the Rules” Marcus Buckingham talks about the importance of motivating your employees. When you are in a big company, I could see it being a potential struggle making sure you are motivating everyone.
