Effective Training

When beginning to work for a new company, a majority of the time the new employee must go through training in order to become acquainted with the work they are expected of at the company. For managers, it is important to understand the proper amount of training for a position based on the expected knowledge an individual should have coming into a company as well as ensuring that the training matches the same criteria that will be expected of them. Another strong point that managers should focus on while training employees is instilling good habits that will ensure jobs are done with efficiency.

When looking at the best training I had received for a job, it was a land maintenance position that had to work with a lot of tools and machines I had never used before. Although the training was in an informal setting, I was able to use the large machinery is areas where mistakes wouldn’t be visible and learn through that process. The individual training me was extremely knowledgeable with the equipment which was helpful in being a visual example on what was needed. The trainer acted very professional and encouraged me to step outside my comfort zone to begin working on larger projects.

On the opposite side, one of the worst trainings I ever received was primarily due to the fact that the trainer had been learning the things he was attempting to teach at the same time as I was. This led to many things being instructed to me incorrectly that had to be brought up later in order to correct any mistakes. The trainer also had ineffective work habits which made it difficult to understand how to properly excel within the company. Although I didn’t experience it, it can be common to have a trainer who leaves the company mid-way through the instruction process leaving you only partially prepared.

Overall, when attempting to train a new employee it is important to understand the interworking’s of the company while providing a safe and open environment for the employee to grow.
