On-Campus Students

Now and through June 15, OSU Campus Recycling, Surplus Property and University Housing and Dining are coordinating the Res. Hall Move-Out Donation Drive – an effort to reduce waste and benefit community non-profit organizations.

Last year, nearly 18,000 pounds of material was diverted from the landfill and given to local non-profits. The goal this year is to reach 20,000 pounds. As of the time I write this blog post, nearly 1,000 pounds of donations have already been collected and brought to our warehouse, even though students don’t move-out until next week.

Campus Recycling has placed donation bins in the lobbies of every residence hall, and each room received an informational door hanger and bags into which to sort donations.

Residents are asked to sort their donations into the bags and bring them to the lobby for collection. Sealed food containers and toiletries should be placed in the white grocery bags provided. All other items for donation should be packed into the large, blue bags. Scrap wood should be set next to the dumpster, outside the hall. See more info here.

Volunteers will sort the materials collected from the halls starting June 14 in the Surplus Property warehouse. All of the food and most of the toiletries will go to the Linn Benton Food Share. The Arc of Benton County, Calvary Chapel, Heartland Humane Society, Benton Habitat for Humanity, Love Inc., OSU Folk Thrift, and Vina Moses are among the other benefiting organizations.

Off-Campus Students

For students living off campus, the May 22nd editorial in the Gazette-Times provides the following advice:

Some organizations in the mid-valley (Furniture Share and The Arc of Benton County are two excellent examples) might be able to accept items that are still in reasonably good shape. Even better, they have the resources to help haul away larger items, a frequent roadblock for students. You can find more information about those organizations on their websites: www.furnitureshare.org and www.arcbenton.org.

An essential guide for reuse of items is the ReUse Directory sponsored by the Corvallis Sustainability Coalition and compiled by volunteers who do plenty of legwork to find out which organizations and businesses will accept what sorts of items. Just point your browser to this website.

…It makes a lot more sense to find a new home for a gently used sofa than to leave it sitting in the rain on the front lawn. A little bit of planning and a couple of phone calls over the next month could easily make a lot of difference – for Corvallis neighborhoods and for our residents in need.
