Beginning fall 2011, OSU will ask students to evaluate instructors using a new online form, identical in content to the current hard-copy version.  Several faculty and many students have commented in recent years about OSU’s use of paper forms for end-of-term evaluations requested in almost every course.  The new online format will be a welcome change!

Susie Brubaker-Cole, Associate Provost for Academic Success and Engagement and Director of Advising, announced Friday some of the benefits of the new system:

  • All students have the opportunity to participate (not just those present on the day course evaluations are administered)
  • Faculty instructors and department heads have timely access to data and comments
  • System maintains anonymity, protecting students and faculty
  • System eliminates the waste of between 500,000 and 750,000 sheets of paper annually
  • System frees up annually over 100 hours of human effort in each academic unit
  • Data is permanently preserved in one central, secure location for all users
  • Departments will be allowed to add more specific discipline-related questions to the online student evaluation of teaching.

Eliminating paper waste is an important aspect of this change, saving 500,000 to 750,000 sheets of paper each year!  Freeing up staff and faculty time is an additional bonus, saving at least 100 hours/year.  Thanks to Susie and the Faculty Senate Student Evaluation of Teaching Task Force, chaired by Deb Pence, for making these changes.
