Reconsidering Brand Loyalty in the Face of Discrimination Accusations – Devils Advocate POV

This is a very complex question that requires considering multiple perspectives. If a company whose products I regularly consumed had recently gotten accused of discrimination charges, this would absolutely change the way that I view the company. It is not uncommon nowadays to hear about popular companies acting in unethical ways. Whether it be unjust labor practices, discrimination, or you discover that the company stands for something that does not align with your views, you would assume that these things have an effect on your consumer choices, right? Like I mentioned, all of these things would change how I view the company without a doubt, but would it stop me from buying their products altogether? Probably not.

For example, in the past two years or so, the milk company, Fairlife, was put on blast for their unethical and abusive practices towards their cows. Before these accusations came out, I was impartial to the company because I do not really drink milk. After everything had been publicized in the media, I was astonished by how poorly some of the workers were treating the cows. This caused me to view the company in a negative way and go out of my way to not use their products.

That being said, as I have gotten a little bit older and have been living on my own, I have begun to use milk regularly. I started out by avoiding Fairlife milk, but many other milk brands do not have the shelf life that Fairlife does. At this point in my life, and for the purposes I need it for, I have begun to use Fairlife milk for the sole reason of their extensive shelf life. Do I still think the company is wrong for their unethical practices? Yes. Is this alone going to stop me from buying their products? Probably not.

Many other very established companies have faced unjust and unethical labor practice accusations. Whether it be Nike, H&M, Starbucks, Amazon, or the multitude of other companies, because of their brand dominance, it is hard to avoid their products altogether regardless of your opinions about their labor practices.
