AAHD Scholarships

AAHD Frederick J Krause Scholarship On Health & Disability

Deadline: Nov. 15, 2014

The American Association on Health and Disability (AAHD) is accepting applications for the AAHD Scholarship Program (2014-2015) which supports students with disabilities pursuing higher education in a field related to disability and health.  Preference is given to students who plan to pursue undergraduate/graduate studies in the field of public health, behavioral health, epidemiology, health promotion, disability studies, to include disability policy and disability research. Scholarships are limited to under $1,000. Scholarships are competitive each year. Please visit the AAHD website at www.aahd.us/scholarship to download application.

 

Deadline for submission is November 15, 2014.

Annual Campus Steam Shutdown

If you’re planning to be on campus over the summer, please be aware that this year’s annual steam system shutdown is scheduled for June 15-18, 2014. The closure could affect hot water and building temperatures.

One out of five people have or will develop a disability in their lifetime, but we rarely think about society’s underlying assumptions regarding this common human experience. This course will explore disability from social psychological and disability studies perspectives. We will explore the social construction of disability and its inter- and intra-personal ramifications. This course departs from traditional psychology courses that focus on impairments within the individual and attempt to normalize people with disabilities. Instead, this class will explore how society’s conception of disability is the main source of handicap.

Volunteer at the Day of Caring

If you’re looking for a great opportunity to volunteer, look no further! The Center for Civic Engagement has opened registration for the Day of Caring, Friday May 30th. They have asked to have the following message distributed throughout the OSU community:

“Registration for Day of Caring Service Projects on Friday May 30th is now OPEN! Students, staff, and faculty are invited to participate in this day of service. Choose from 14 different service projects with 12 community partners. Projects will take place at various times in the afternoon and check-in will be on campus at the Dixon lower courts, with transportation provided from there.  The Center for Civic Engagement is partnering with the United Way of Benton & Lincoln Counties to host this event.  Work will include options ranging from outdoor park cleanups and invasive species removal to community garden maintenance to facility cleanup, crafting, program preparation, home building, and much more! Many projects can accommodate children and youth as well.

Architect Chris Downey Coming to OSU

Come listen to special guest speaker Chris Downey, “an architect who lost his sight and gained a new way of seeing the world.” -TED.com

Chris Downey will be speaking at Oregon State University on Tuesday, May 13th.

An active architect before and after the loss of his vision, Downey is now a member of the board of directors for the San Francisco LightHouse Organization, and also teaches about accessibility and universal design at UC Berkeley. He is one of the few practicing blind architects in the world. With his personal business, Architecture for the Blind, Downey has consulted on the Department of Veterans Affairs Polytrauma and Blind Rehabilitation Center in Paolo Alto, CA; the Duke University Eye Center Clinic in Durham, NC; and the new Transbay Transit Center in San Francisco, CA.

During his trip to OSU, Downey will give four different presentations, with the main event on Tuesday May 13th at 6:30 pm in the Linus Pauling Science Center lecture hall. This event is open to the public.

Research Participants Needed

Be Active, Work Safe is part of a research project being conducted by Drs. Laurel Kincl and Simon Driver at Oregon State University.

They need participants to help review the usability and accessibility of an online program aimed at increasing the physical activity and workplace safety for people with a disability.

Participants should meet the following qualifications:

  • Are 18-65 years of age
  • Have a physical disability
  • Are receiving services at OSU DAS
  • Are able to communicate in English
  • Have access to a computer and the internet
