Aurora Villarroel, an epidemiologist and CVM Assistant Professor in the Rural Veterinary Practice, was recently appointed an adjunct faculty member in the College of Public Health and Human Sciences (PHHS). The appointment is an acknowledgement of Villarroel’s collaboration on research and teaching in the public health arena.

In 2010, Villarroel and senior Jennifer Jackson presented research on factors affecting the transmission of zoonotic disease to veterinarians to the Oregon Public Health Association. That research is now part of several courses taught in PPHS and was recently published in the journal of Zoonoses and Public Health. Villarroel also teaches courses on ‘Dietary Interventions for Public Health’ and ‘Community Nutrition’.

Last year, Villarroel collaborated with county health officials, OSU extension agents, and PHHS professors on ‘Don’t Let Rabies Get Your Goat”, a community-based vaccination and education program to address the high prevalence of rabies in Southern Oregon

by Sami Pederson (Class of 2013)

By day three of the Western Veterinary Conference, I already felt like it had been worth the trip. With two days left, I was blown away by everything learned and the people met. Vet schools all over the US (and Canada) are producing some seriously stellar students.

My arrival on Saturday evening was relaxing, checking into the Excalibur Hotel and spending some time walking up and down the strip. It’s easily overwhelming, inserting yourself into a crowded street with the classic flashing lights, people throwing things at you, and never quite sure which direction you’re walking in. Sunday was the commencement of the conference, which proceeded through the week with fantastic lectures, student receptions, and plenty of entertainment.

Even though the trip cost me an entire week of school, I strategically attended several urology and emergency medicine lectures, as well as a few on food animal surgery. I was even pleasantly surprised one night during my daily Blackboard check and download session to find we had covered the IRIS categorization of renal failure in class – conveniently also covered in that afternoon’s Feline Chronic Renal Failure hour. Other lectures of personal interest included “Setting up a Mobile Clinic”, “A Psychotherapist’s View of Veterinarians”, “Treating Shock Beyond Dehydration and Hemorrhage” , and “Caprine Field Surgery”.

This opportunity was granted to me through the faculty and staff at the Oregon State CVM. One third-year student had been selected for the award and trip from each veterinary school. As such an honor, the conference board members really know how to take care of the students. One of our AM breakfast receptions involved a great speech by Guy Pidgeon, Chief Executive Officer of the WVC, as well as recognition of each student. I was excited to find Dr. Ron Mandsager there to help me represent Oregon State – a personal thanks!

To the upcoming classes: the WVC board has decided to change the direction of this scholarship – it will now be open to applications from students, rather than a decision made by faculty members. When the announcement comes, many of you may brush it off, thinking, “how could a bunch of lectures be worth missing a week of school”, which even some of our faculty thought was a bit ambitious. However, I implore you to step back and realize how much more of an opportunity this could be. Third year is overwhelming and at times demoralizing (sorry to say), and it was incredibly refreshing to spend time talking to incredible students about their passions and paths to where they are now. A new friend from Mississippi State worked with another student last year to raise over $300,000 so their Shelter Medicine department could purchase a second mobile clinic. WOW. And if you think the lecture material will be over your head, trust me, IT’S NOT. I was amazed at my level of understanding and the strength of education we’re currently receiving. Seeing yourself answer 90% correctly during interactive lectures is a major ego boost, when you know certified veterinarians don’t remember as much about their renal physiology.

With that said, I would like to once again thank the school for this fantastic opportunity to learn, network, and enjoy Las Vegas.

Additionally, students will receive complimentary registration including travel and daily stipend to attend the 2012 Western Veterinary Conference in Las Vegas, Nev., February 19-23.

Sami Pederson, class of 2013, was selected by the OSU CVM Scholarship Committee for her scholastic aptitude, financial need and her potential to assume leadership roles later in her career.

In response, Sami commented, “As a third year student, I’m thrilled and honored to be selected as an attendee for this years’ Western Veterinary Conference. Involvement in OSU CVM organizations such as the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP), Zoo, Wildlife and Exotics (ZWE), Ag Animal, and International Veterinary Student Association (IVSA) has shown me the diverse levels of care and services available to animals in our own country and others. This opportunity for lectures, labs, and networking will greatly augment my interest in leadership and desire to make positive and sustainable impacts in the veterinary world.”

Congratulations, Sami!

Dean Cyril Clarke welcomed more than 300 people to the annual Scholarship and Awards Ceremony on June 8 at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center. In his comments Dr. Clarke referred to the high cost of veterinary education and the burden students bear due to increases in tuition and limited state support. He stated: “thanks to scholarship donors, the availability of $250,000 in scholarship funding will have a significant and positive financial impact on our students and allow us to recognize and celebrate their excellence.”

Dr. Susan Tornquist served as mistress of ceremonies and announced the awards, invited donors in attendance to help present their awards and congratulated the stream of students receiving awards. Only the merit and proficiency recognition awards were presented at the ceremony. Financial assistance scholarships are also given to eligible students as resources allow.

College of Veterinary Medicine Honors and Awards Committee had the difficult and time-consuming task of selecting recipients. Thanks go to Drs. Craig Ruaux, Chair; Katja Zellmer, Patrick Chappell and Linda Blythe. Debrah Rarick is the scholarship coordinator.

Following the awards presentations, a reception sponsored by Nestlé Purina allowed people to congratulate the award recipients.

A professor at the Oregon State University College of Veterinary Medicine and a resident of Philomath, Oregon, is recognized for excellence in teaching and dedication to the veterinary medical profession and all the animals it serves.

Linda Blythe earned her D.V.M. degree in 1974, completed a large animal internship in 1975, and received a Ph.D. in comparative pathology in 1979, all at UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

Blythe is a founding faculty member of Oregon’s veterinary school, where she also served in leading administrative roles. Blythe’s teaching focuses on neuroscience and sports medicine. She received the Carl J. Norden-Pfizer Distinguished Teaching Award in 1986 and 1992 in recognition of her ability to combine basic instruction with clinical application for her students.

Blythe’s research into equine neurological diseases led to her discovery of equine temporohyoid osteoarthropathy, a disorder that can predispose horses to fracture along the base of the skull or one of the bones of the throat. She also explored the role of vitamin E in equine degenerative myeloencephalopathy, a now preventable disease of young horses. Blythe is also interested in greyhounds and canine physical rehabilitation; she is the lead author of two books on the care of the racing and retired greyhound. Blythe received the Pfizer Research Award in 1996 and was inducted into the Greyhound Hall of Fame in 2010. She has authored more than 100 scientific articles.

Among her contributions to the profession, which include involvement in the Oregon Veterinary Medical Association, the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges and the National Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners, Blythe has been instrumental in the development of a new specialty organization, the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation.

Three out of four submitted abstracts have been accepted for the Student Case/Research Presentation Competition in September at the American Association of Bovine Practitioners (AABP) in St. Louis, Mo. Assistant Professor Dr. Aurora Villarroel said, “This is a huge deal because only ten abstracts are accepted every year from all 34 veterinary schools in the United States and Canada, and we got 30% of the slots! Additionally, I was personally congratulated by AABP for the quality of the submissions, since all of them are my advisees for their senior paper projects.”

Titles of the accepted abstracts are:

Tessa Maggiulli (Class 2013) — Rare Cryptococus gattii infection in a healthy dairy goat following a cesarean section (case presentation)

Tessa and Skobli

Elisha Adkins, Justin Ward and Kim Noyes (Class of 2012) — It’s not all black and white: why using Holstein serum IgG and total protein cutoff values is invalid in Jersey calves when assessing passive transfer (research presentation)

Elisha Adkins, Justin Ward and Kim Noyes (Class of 2012) — Correlation of Serum Total Protein, IgG, and GGT, with Morbidity and Mortality in Jersey Calves (research presentation)

“I’m very proud of all of them. They all work very hard to get this,” Dr. V added. As selected student presenters, they will receive $500 for travel expenses and compete for two awards in each category of research and case presentations. Two of the students will be representing OSU CVM as student delegates for the AABP: Elisha Adkins, senior delegate, and Tessa Maggiulli, junior delegate.

Four students will again represent the College at the AABP Quiz Bowl: Justin Ward, Sadie Curry, Tessa Maggiulli and Elisha Adkins. Good luck to them!
