Students Invited to Leadership Event

November 8th, 2012

By Ashley Runey

The OSU-CVM Student Chapter of the AVMA (SCAVMA) will be hosting our second Oregon Leadership Experience and Dedicated Service (OLEADS) event. We are pleased to tell you that Dr. Betsy Charles and Drake Charles, two of the current main facilitators of the Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE), will lead this event on the weekend of January 11-13th, 2013.

The overall goal of this event is to provide an opportunity for participants to learn and apply the basic principles of successful servant leadership and underlying philosophy of leadership, demonstrated through characteristics and practices, such as awareness, persuasion, conceptualization, foresight, growth, and community building. This three day event consists of an interactive curriculum, including a series of lecture presentations, group activities, and peer-peer collaboration. It emphasizes servant-leadership, emotional intelligence, teamwork, and communication. An array of learning formats are presented for experiential learning that empowers participants to take responsibility for their preferred future.

We are excited to invite you to participate in this event. We believe that this will be an invaluable opportunity to begin second term in the spirit of leadership and community building, establishing new relationships with students, faculty, and staff while having a blast! We will keep interested participants up to date when registration will be open for the event. For more information please contact the OLEADS committee at SCAVMAEvents@oregonstate.edu [check to see if this is still a real email]. We are looking forward to seeing you all at this phenomenal event!

Below are some testimonials from students who attended last year’s OLEADS event:

“After attending the National Veterinary Leadership Experience (VLE) I was very excited for Oregon State to be hosting our own leadership event.  The first OLEADS (Oregon Leadership and Dedicated  ervices) event far surpassed any expectations I had, which were set pretty high based on my experience  t VLE.  OLEADS gives students, faculty and practicing veterinarians the opportunity to come together  nd hone  their leadership and communication skills.  Not only are you able to better your own personal  bilities, you gain the skills necessary to help better those around you as well.  During the event I was able  o interact and become friends with many people that I would have otherwise not had the pleasure of  meeting.  I would highly recommend OLEADS 2013 to anyone and can personally attest that this years  acilitators (Dr. Besty Charles and her husband Drake Charles) are amazing.  Their passion for life and  eaching will have people leaving after the weekend fired up and ready to conquer anything.”
-Ryan, Class of 2013

“OLEADS ROCKS! It’s a great opportunity to get to know your peers and professors outside of class – and it’s fun!!”
-Shannon, Class of 2016
