Cultivating my career and recognizing key underlaying factors about myself.
Regarding the questions to ask yourself, I think doing this frequently and checking in on how you got to where you are is important for improving motivation, production, and overall enjoyment of what you are doing. In this post I will be doing a reflection of these questions below.
- What am I good at?
- I recently had a feedback meeting with a supervisor and we went over this question. I think one of the things I am good at is recognizing the recipe to success for something and putting myself in a place where I can see what is measured and tailor my strengths to the criteria. This has helped me accomplish one of my big goals of getting selected for pilot training.
- What do I value?
- I value effort greatly. I am incredibly goal oriented to the point where If per say I didn’t accomplish a goal it would have a pretty big toll on me. In order to mitigate this, I reflect honestly on how much effort I put into something because if I can genuinely say I left everything on the table then it isn’t as bad if you don’t get exactly what you wanted.
- How did I get here?
- I got here by doing what I mentioned in the first two points. I understand that there are measurables that are affected by my performance, things that are in my control. When something is in my control and it has an effect on my performance or selection then I spend a large chunk of my energy focused on that, not things that I have no control over.
- Where am I going?
- In a literal sense, I am going to pilot training. This is the next big chapter of my life so the way I think about it is that I am going to the starting line. There will be new people, new environments, new criteria all of which I have no experience with. This being said I will approach it the same way I have mentioned before in this post.
