Training Effectiveness

Throughout my time in college, I have taken multiple classes that have been useful and some that haven’t been considering what I will be doing after graduation. One class that I have taken in college that I found useful and very effective in training was Introduction to Virtual Design and Construction. I took this class with Tracy Arras. Her training methods in class and outside of the classroom were very helpful. One thing mentioned in the lecture notes is hands-on training. In these classes we used 3D and 2D programs to convey sites, buildings, etc. With this, Tracy used hands-on training by walking us through step-by-step processes in classes similar to a simulation. It showed us the proper process in setting up our documents so they were professional, what she and others would look for, and how to make it readable for anyone. The reason this was so effective is because it taught us how to use the programs correctly, timely, and prepared us for assignments outside of the classroom. Based on the learning materials, the training was relevant because it related directly to other assignments, we were given constant feedback on how to improve and what was done correctly, and the class was well coordinated. Ultimately, Tracy’s method of teaching was very effective in this class, and it made it go very smooth. There wasn’t much room for error because it was taught very well, and if there was error it typically wasn’t because of the teaching style.

Another class I have taken during college was a traffic control class for a speeding ticket. This class wasn’t very effective for my scenario. The training technique was showing videos with some text in between explaining what happened to drivers in accidents, DUI’s, etc. It just didn’t seem that the information they were teaching me weren’t relevant to the situation. It felt that the class was trying to scare or shake you up rather than teach you. Like said in the learning materials, “make the content meaningful” which this class that I took didn’t really do. They would rather scare or shake up the people taking the class rather than informing them about their mistakes.
