Week 9 – Blog Post: Self-Reflection

1. What am I good at? I am good at communicating with people. I could always be a positive person and be kind to others. I could face negative feelings with my positive emotions.

2. What do I value? I value the relationship with others. I put much effort on building relationships because I hope I could be able to get good friends.

3. How did I get here? I could build up my network zone with different social circle. I could meet more friends by introduced by my friends and bring my personality to them.

4. Where am I going? I am going to be a graduate student. I would like to find a job that can give me a chance to communicate with others and make good use of my positive emotions.

Week 7 – Blog Post: IPIP Results & Reactions

According to the test that I have taken, all five dimensions including extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness to experience, I am positioning in the average score. For extraversion, the test told me that my score on Extraversion is average, indicating I am neither a subdued loner nor a jovial chatterbox. I enjoy time with others but also time alone. My level of agreeableness is average, indicating some concern with others’ Needs, but, generally, unwillingness to sacrifice myself for others. My score on Conscientiousness is average. This means I am reasonably reliable, organized, and self-controlled. My score on Neuroticism is average, indicating that my level of emotional reactivity is typical of the general population. Stressful and frustrating situations are somewhat upsetting to me, but I am generally able to get over these feelings and cope with these situations. My score on Openness to Experience is average, indicating I enjoy tradition but are willing to try new things. My thinking is neither simple nor complex. To others, I appear to be a well-educated person but not an intellectual.

These results have both strengths and weaknesses to potential employers. As all five dimensions I am positioning at the average, it means that I am not as bad as most of the people, however, it also means that I am not as good as those upper part’s people. Some employers might want to get the highest potential of the candidates instead of all average candidates. In the strengths part, I will be able to work with a group or work individually as I enjoy time with others but also fine with alone. Also, I have average agreeableness, it means that I am willing to listen to others’ opinions but I will strongly tell others about what my thoughts are, in order not to sacrifice myself. To the employers, it is really important to get an employee that is able to control themselves. I get an average on conscientiousness, it shows that I could be reliable, organized, and self-controlled. For my stress level, it might be a good or bad thing to the employers because I am easy to get stressed but I can still keep calm under pressure and I can cope with it even though it might upset me a little. Also, my openness to experience might suitable for those employers who are looking for the traditional job duties’ position because I am more comfortable with the traditional but willing to try new stuff.

Week 5 – Blog Post: Typical vs. Maximal Performance

If I were in the shoes of the business owner and had to choose Avery or Jaime to be my colleague, I would choose Jaime. It is understandable that Avery has a high potential when he is performing in some important events in a business. However, Jaime was able to perform his job in the consistent way, letting his performance has the standard one. For me as a business owner, I would prefer to have a consist worker because I do not have to worry about his/her daily performance since I knew that he/she could perform in the way that is acceptable. Although when it comes to some certain situations like the clutch one, it is really unfortunate that Jaime could be only provide me with the daily job performance, it might not also get such situations. Even so, I got such a team could help me to solve the problem together.

I think Avery is more suitable for the job duties that require workers to have different performance and the job environments are fluctuated. If the job requires Avery to change his performance such as the sales team. Sales team requires workers to have different planning in each of the different events. They have to communicate and have meeting with different customers. Different events and customers provide Avery a changing environment that he could provide his high potential.

For Jaime, he is a low potential but high consistent person. I think Jaime is more suitable for working at the company that is required workers to provide a standard job performance but less creative and fewer outbreak situations. For example, the job such as an accountant, it requires workers to perform a high standard without mistakes, it would be suitable for Jaime to work for it.

Critiquing a Recruitment Ad

The first impression that I present to potential employers was active and willing to take responsibility person. I would like to present myself as a responsible person and willing to take risks that the employer could be able to trust me and give me tasks without worrying about will I ruin the job tasks. Also, I would like to present as an active person who is willing to ask for help when I faced difficulties. Being active is important in the workplace as the employer gets you thousands of job duties and you have to do extra than those and show your passion of work by being active to ask questions and provide advice. My strengths would be great in communication skills and I can keep a good relationship with others. Having the ability to have a great communication platform with your colleagues is really important to help your career path and be able to present your ideas to colleagues. My weaknesses would be a perfect pursuing person who would also require jobs to be done in a well way and no mistakes.

The means of a novel and creative situation wanted ad visible for me is to show the role play in my daily life. My daily conversation with my previous colleagues, for example how I keep the relationship with them and the way I presented my ideas to my colleagues. Letting employers get a higher understanding of myself. Also, I would provide my previous colleagues or employers’ comments for me about my performance of job duties and responsibilities. It allows employers to get more information by people with more real than just admiring myself.

Blog Post: Job Descriptions

Thinking of the last job that I had, the last job that I had was during summer. At that time, I have searched for my internship job in jobsDB. During the job searching, I have found for the Human Resources job position to apply for. When I search for jobs, I will usually start looking at the job description. The job description will list all the main job duties and job responsibilities.

The last job that I had was an HR internship. The job description did help me a lot when I applied for the job. As I would learn more about what job duties I actually need to do in the department of human resources. The job requires me to do the normal administrative duties and the main job duties were recruiting and holding events. At first, I would like to place my previous association club experience to the job because I think my previous experience would help me to get the job offer. The job description helps me to get more information and to have a deeper understanding of the job duties. It let me make the decision of applying for the job.

I think the job description is always similar to the actual duties that I have to finish. It is because the employers would also like to ensure you have the ability to do the tasks they gave us. It is not necessary for them to hide their job duties. If they hide it and the employees that hired, have no ability to do the tasks, they need to rehire. It will become more complicated.

Experiences with Discrimination

Recently, I have read a news about my favorite company was faced with a public lawsuit in which they were accused of widespread discrimination against individuals from an ethnicity, culture, or belief system you associate with. It turns totally my side and support to the company.

I think the outstanding claims of discrimination change the way I felt about the company. I could not accept a company that involves discrimination, no matter who are they discriminated against (customers/ employees). I do think discrimination is the worse situation that a company provides to its stakeholders. As first, I love the company so well because they provided the customers with extraordinary shopping experiences. I thought they will treat individuals well as I always think they are the best company ever. However, after knowing the fact that they have such discrimination, I turned my side and no longer willing to support this company. It is very important for a company to keep its respect toward their stakeholders. My support towards a company does not only depend on how the quality that the products from a company. But it is more about the brand image of a company. Once the company breaks its own image to the public, the public will get disappointed and no longer support them. As the customers are buying the brand and when they pay for the products, it is meaning that they support the action the company did. Therefore, if the customers keep buying the products from the discriminated company, they are also being the one who discriminated.

In the future, I would not like to work for such a company being involved in discrimination. If the company would discriminated against individuals, the company is not a good one and also I would afraid that I would be the next one who is being discriminated against.

The Case for Recruitment & Selection

When a company is considering how should the resources being allocated, the department of marketing or product design is normally getting more resources than others. The reasons why some companies might think that marketing or product design is more important than employee recruitment and selection are because of the short term effectiveness and costs. When a company decides the way to increase their profit, the first idea comes up with will always be launching a new product. Since the company thinks the product can directly help with the sales volume. However, they always forget about the help from the good employees. How to launch a good product or get a good marketing team without great employees? Thus, the company always neglect the recruitment and selection is because of the direct income source from a company. Also, the second reason will cost. Companies think that it is always difficult to hire a good employee because a good employee requests a lot such as a higher salary and benefits. If the company is not providing a satisfying compensation package to the applicants, it is hard for the company to attract them.

The potential strength of a company not to prioritize employee recruitment and selection will be a higher expected profit. As putting more resources in marketing, the company will know more about the customers’ needs and the market segments to fulfill the market. For the potential weakness, the employees might not be competitive enough compared to other companies. As the company is not willing to allocate more resources in recruitment and selection, the newly hired candidates might be able to fulfill the job tasks that are required, but they might not be able to input the extra.

Job Application Experiences

As a junior student, I have tried different types of jobs. In the job application, the last job I have applied for is my internship. As I did not have many job experiences before, I believed that my resume is not as well as other applicants. Therefore, I did not mention much about my job experiences but I have mentioned my experience in being a residence association club to enrich my resume. After finishing my resume, I found a company and job that is matched my expectations to apply through jobsDB. A few days later, I received a phone call from the company I have applied for, asking me to have the interview. As I have never tried to get a formal interview before, I asked my parents and friends to give me advice that can help to prepare my interview.

During the interview, I got lots of information from the interviewer telling me about the company’s history. I also understood what job duties I have to do as well as my responsibilities. When the interviewer asked why the company should hire me for the internship position, I realized that I can make good use of my experience from the residence association club. As my job duties including job tasks to organize different activities to colleagues. My previous association club experience matches the job duty. I found myself will be helpful and I can assist the company to hold the activities. After knowing my own values to the company, it increased my desire to work there. I thought being an interviewee will be tough stuff for me, but in fact, it helps me to understand more about whether the company is the one that I am looking for and also helps the company to look for the right candidates.
