Week 1 Blog Post

  • Hi Group 1!

One of the most memorable situations where compensation was a motivating factor was around 2016 when my mom retired early the from the Texas education system, to go teach over seas. She had applied to be a teacher for the DOD many times over the years, never got it, so she started looking else wear. She soon found and accepted a job offer in China, sold almost all of her belongings, her car, the house, and flew to China. She has now taught in China, Germany, Guatemala and is on her way to Thailand this summer.

Compensation motivated this behavior because she wanted to build up her retirement savings, and the compensation offered at the school in China was much more than that in the suburbs of Austin, TX. The benefits included housing, food, insurance, bonuses, and to travel home and back every year. The pay was also much more than that in Texas. On a plus side both my sister and I had moved out and my mom wanted to travel, so why not go for it? It’s scary to leave everything you’ve known, to go live in a new country, but I upping her retirement savings was more important.
