On October 11th, 2012 Disney announced a new paper policy resulting from two years of conversations with the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) to make a commitment to source their paper more responsibly.

At Oregon State University Printing and Mailing Services we utilize recycled and sustainably managed paper as our standard house sheet and this past Earth Day 2012 we became Forest Stewardship Council Certified (FSC) and can include the FSC Label along with the Rainforest Action Network (RAN) logo on any job – all you have to do is request it!

So there you have it, (not to put Kermit the frog down or anything) it really is easy being green!

In celebration of Earth Week, Printing and Mailing Services officially became Forest Stewardship Council™ (FSC®) certified. Oregon State University makes a positive difference by being smarter, greener, healthier, safer, kinder, sustainable and more. Printing and Mailing Services takes these very seriously and is committed to doing its share to accomplish these points as well as help to preserve the world’s resources.

Established in 1993 as a response to concerns over global deforestation, FSC is an independent, non-governmental, not-for-profit organization established to promote the responsible management of the world’s forests. FSC certification provides a credible link between responsible production and consumption of forest products, enabling consumers and businesses to make purchasing decisions that benefit people and the environment as well as providing ongoing business value.

In addition to now being able to offer FSC certified papers and Chain-of-Custody certification to orders, Printing and Mailing Services approaches sustainability in many ways. The use of cutting-edge digital equipment helps to provide for less waste and less consumption in all projects printed. Paper choices are also a big part in helping the environment and standard “house” stocks are not only FSC certified papers, but also contain 30% Post Consumer Waste (PCW) classifying them as recycled papers. Toner used in all digital equipment is environmentally non-toxic and a cartridge recycling program is in place.

Ari Grossman-Naples, Associate Director of Printing and Mailing Services, commented “We are very excited to be fully FSC certified and completing the process during Earth Week. This program and its offerings will blend well with the many other outstanding efforts and programs that promote sustainability within Oregon State University.”

Ari Grossman-Naples, Associate Director of OSU Printing and Mailing Services announced today that his facility has begun the process of becoming Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Chain-of-Custody Certified. Upon completion of the work to implement the FSC rules and procedures within the organization, they will be able to provide FSC Certified printed matter to any customer desiring their order to carry the well-known and respected certification mark. In addition to the FSC mark, customers will also be offered the option to add the Rainforest Alliance mark to their FSC Certified jobs. OSU Printing and Mailing Services is working with the Printers Green Resource LLC InGreen Program to complete the work necessary and expects to be fully certified by the end of April.

Commenting on his organization’s commitment to FSC Certification Mr. Grossman-Naples stated, “We are very pleased to be taking this step toward providing our customers with such a dynamic and credible certification scheme. FSC Certification is the gold standard of programs designed to promote total transparency in the use of sustainable materials and their processing within the paper and printing industries. This program will blend well with the many other outstanding efforts and programs that promote sustainability within Oregon State University”.
