Home and Garden Updates

We have been basking in our early spring dry spells at home, making some major progress on garden projects. We built raised beds that will take full advantage of the summer sun, moving dirt from our old raised bed next to the deck. We will be destroying our falling-apart deck to re-make the back yard space. As you will see, we have most of the plants in the raised beds! And more plants are on the way. Next week we will be getting our dwarf cherry tree for the back yard, a red currant bush for the front, and a Sochi tea plant, a cultivar from Russia that is hardy to 0° F. They promise that the tea is very aromatic and flavorful.

Last week I spent the better part of an afternoon in IKEA, a trip that I look forward to every couple of years. I am remodeling my master half-bathroom, so I made a list and was ready to do some efficient shopping. But after 3 hours in the store I wanted to curl up into a ball in the corner. It’s so exhausting to go through the whole place, I go a little crazy. Thankfully, I survived and came home with lots of wonderful things to re-do my bathroom and other great organizing things. I bought 2 Scandinavian-style clothes drying racks that fill me with contented warmth when I see them filled with drying clothes on a warm summer day.

Hammock in the evening

Just a quick update. Things are going well. The weather has been nice and the kids have been enjoying the trampoline.

Tomorrow will be two weeks since Nora’s last seizure. I will talk with the doctor about weaning her anti-epileptic medication. I am excited for that but a little tense too. It’s impossible to say how much it has benefitted her. But it seems a lot of keto parents say their kids improve off the drugs. That may not be surprising given that almost all kids on the keto diet are in the diet for the very reason that drugs have failed to control their seizures. She is doing really well though, apart from the few breakthrough seizures.

Life rolls on.

tra-ma-tra-ma-tramampoline!!!!

Happy birthday to Anders and Nora! The trampoline is a joint birthday present, coming in between their birthdays (well, enough for their understanding anyway). Special thanks to Grandma Gigi for enthusiastically and financially making it happen. We have 2 very happy kids!

It took 2 weeks to arrive, which meant 2 weeks of mounting anticipation. The ladder and anchoring kit arrived first (thankfully). The 2 BIG packages showed up on our front walk today. It took about 1.5 hours to set it up with surprisingly little frustration.

Anders and I got the first secret jump after we finished setting up the enclosure. Nora was inside finishing her bath, and she didn’t mind finding us on it when she ran out. It’s so fun! The kids will have to give me an occasional turn too! We haven’t seen Ted on it yet. He will be out there tomorrow.

I look forward to laying in the hammock and reading a book while the kids bounce themselves silly. I’m also taking bets on how long it takes until the novelty wears off. And on how long it takes until we get a field of broken kids laying in the grass.

In an unrelated note, Nora cracked me up today. We were looking at the Español Diccionario Ilustrado, a book with pictures and their Spanish words. I was trying to point out and teach Nora a few words. She kept talking over me in her gibberish Spanish sounds, which are quite convincing to a barely-Spanish speaker like myself. Finally she barked out, “mama, how to you say ‘don’t interrupt me’ in Spanish?” Touché, my darling. Well said.

What they said

Act 1:

Anders [repeatedly]: “Yankee Doodle went to town a-riding on a heater, accidentally flipped the switch and barbequed his wiener.”
Me [every time]: [Cringe] Ah man, that’s horrible. Ewwww….[etc.]
Anders [after the 50th time]: What? It’s a silly song. It’s funny.
Me: Yeah, but it’s kinda gross, and I shouldn’t even be so bothered by it. I don’t even have a wiener.
Anders [thinking]: Huh? Whaddya mean?
Me: Hmmm, well, nevermind.
Anders: [thinks more]

I’m happy that he is so still innocent. I did not expect that, what with the boy giggling and being so smart and all. I’m sorry that I may have been the one to introduce this concept.

Act 2:

Anders got a new Lego set today from Matty and family. He was trying to put it together outside with Henry. Nora enters and also tries to “help.”

Anders & Henry: Nora! No! Nora is messing with the legos! No Nora! [etc. etc.]
Me [after waiting to let them resolve it]: Boys, stop saying “no” to her. You see that it’s not working. Give her something to DO instead.
Nora [whispering to Anders]: Distract me.

Sheesh, can a kid be any more astute?

Anders then picked up an empty soap bottle that Nora uses in her play kitchen, and threw it across the yard. My response was, “she’s not a dog!” but Nora took the bait. She retrieved it and they played name-the-silly-Nora-cat-dog while continuing to play fetch. The boys took turns playing with Nora, while the other built part of the lego kit. Who knew?

Nora is also practically begging to learn another language. She likes to talk in nonsense “Spanish,” which tends to hit the right sounds. She’s always making up her own words with their definitions, and is quick to correct our poor pronunciation. Today she asked me how to say “yes” in Spanish, and about 45 minutes later answered one of my questions with “si.” How am I going to keep up with this kid?

Anders April

April has been the month of Anders. He showed us his great school work at his student-led conference, started the spring soccer season, and turned 7 years old. It has been a busy few weeks.

7th Birthday Melee

Anders and his birthday-buddy Atticus shared their 7th birthday party at Peak Elite, a gymnastics place in town. It was a downright free-for-all, grown ups and kids alike. It’s hard to say who had more fun! No one was permanently injured, and everyone went home happily exhausted.

More birthday pictures to follow.

Easter

Grandma Margie was with us for a few weeks, including over Easter.  The kids enjoyed the usual activities, although no chocolate or candy because of Nora’s diet.  Anders was so jazzed the night before Easter he could barely sleep.  It was like another Christmas for him.

Spring is slowly coming.  The last week had more days with some sun and warmer temperatures.

When will spring come?

Rain, rain, rain here in Corvallis, with small resplendent moments of sunshine.
