Want to get the latest Oregon Sea Grant news and information delivered straight to your desktop as soon as it’s posted here? Subscribe to our feed!

A feed is special format for delivering frequently updated content. We generate the feed each time we post new content to the blog, and you can subscribe to it using any of several free tools (known as feed readers or aggregators). If you want more technical details, read more about feeds on Wikipedia.

The beauty of newsfeeds is that they don’t involve your e-mail. You don’t need to provide an e-mail address or other identifying information to subscrbe, and the updates bypass your mailbox entirely unless you choose a reader that delivers them that way. More often, a desktop utility – or your Web browser – alerts you when a new item is posted, usually with a headline and a brief text excerpt, and you choose whether to go to the Web and read it.

Depending on what kind of reader you choose, subscribing may be as simple as dragging the appropriate icon from the blog page to the feed reader of your choice, or adding one of these URLs to the reader you already have:

  • http://feeds.feedburner.com/BreakingWaves

Need a reader? Many free ones are available, and you may find plug-ins that let you subscribe to your favorite feeds and read them straight from your favorite Web browser. If your browser is up to date, it may already have a feed reader built right in – check the “help” files to find out how to use it. There are even readers for your mobile phone or PDA.

Here’s a list of some of the most popular feed-reading utilities.
