Oregon Sea Grant is seeking to fill a full-time, 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position to support development and execution of Oregon Sea Grant’s competitive research process, manage our program development grants, coordinate the student scholars program, and prepare various proposal and project budgets, reports and other documents required by the National Sea Grant office and other funders.  

At minimum, candidates should have a Master’s degree in marine or environmental sciences, resource management, public policy, public administration, resource economics or a related field that gives the candidate a firm basis in the physical and social sciences, or with policy/ administration. In addition, we require two years of experience with responsibility for program or project management, monitoring and coordination.

Communications manager applicants sought

Oregon Sea Grant is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time position leading its communications team in developing products and strategies that interpret Sea Grant-funded research, support the program’s administration and contribute to outreach and engagement activities which help inform and engage the public in learning, discussing and acting on ocean and coastal issues.

At minimum, candidates should have

  • Specialized skill in science writing, graphic design, or multi-media development
  • A bachelor’s degree, or equivalent work experience, in a communications related field, with an emphasis on science communications. A master’s degree is preferred
  • At least five years relevant work experience
  • Evidence of experience supervising or leading other communications professionals
  • Evidence of actively engaging personnel in development, planning and implementation of project communications
  • Effective written and oral communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to represent complex scientific or environmental concepts in a way that will excite interest and can be understood by the various audiences as appropriate.

Based at the Oregon Sea Grant office on the Oregon State University campus in Corvallis, OR, the communications manager is expected to travel as needed to the Hatfield Marine Scence Center Visitor Center in Newport, OR, and to other project locations on the Oregon coast. 

Duties include planning and development of print, digital media and other communication projects, scholarly activities supporting the science of science communication, managing media relations, and overseeing a team that, among other duties supports special projects of the National Sea Grant Network and oversees exhibit design for our HMSC Visitor Center in Newport.

Spring, summer opportunities for undergrad, grad students

Oregon Sea Grant is seeking qualified undergraduate and graduate students to take part in working and learning opportunities this spring and summer.

  • Our fifth Summer Scholars program places high caliber undergraduate students from around the country for 10 weeks working with public agencies (federal, state, and local) . Scholars assist host agencies with field work, lab work, analysis, research, policy development, and/or outreach and public engagement efforts around ocean and coastal issues. Each is will be assigned to a specific project under a mentor and expected to dedicate at least 40 hours a week to the program starting on June 15. The application deadline is Feb. 20.   • The Sea Grant Marine Education program at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport is hiring spring and summer student interns to assist with public and school workshops, classes, and field trips around marine science topics. The positions, open to any qualified undergraduate or graduate student, involve creating and presenting lab and field programs for school, youth and family groups, maintaining education program labs and equipment, and taking part in special projects.

College students: Looking for a great way to spend the summer while learning and working with coastal Oregon communities? Take a look at our newest fellowship opportunity on Oregon’s south coast!

Oregon Sea Grant and the Wild Rivers Coast Alliance (WRCA) are offering an epic summer outreach experience. One upper-level undergraduate or graduate level student will experience the beauty of the south coast and help develop WRCA coastal tourism programs and initiatives to vitalize south coast communities. This hands-on experience features mentorship by a career professional, student housing in Bandon, Oregon, if needed, and a summer stipend. The fellowship dates are flexible -between June and September- and will span about ten weeks.

Sea Grant seeks renewable energy outreach coordinator, part-time bioscience tech

NEWPORT  – Oregon Sea Grant is advertising to fill two Newport-based positions: A full-time marine renewable energy outreach and engagement associate, and a part-time bioscience research technician in our aquatic animal health program.

The marine renewable energy position is grant-funded for one year, with a possible extension. It’s intended to fund a community educator to develop and coordinate educational programs related to the field of marine renewable energy, and more specifically, to the Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center.

The second positition, a BioScience Research Technician 12, is for approximately 18-19 hours per week, and based at Sea Grant’s Aquatic Animal Health Program at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. The position  assists our program lead/Extension veterionarian and our senior aquarist with animal husbandry, facility operration, and ongoinbg research related to the health management of aquatic animals in captivity, and  the use of aquatic animals in public engagement and education. OSG seeks part-time videographer

CORVALLIS – Oregon Sea Grant is seeking a versatile videographer with TV production-level experience – from scripting to shooting to post-production –  to fill a part-time opening on our small professional communications team.

Oregon Sea Grant produces a variety of video products, from short online features and mobile apps to DVD collections, on a wide range of ocean and coastal science and natural history topics. Our ideal videographer is an independent self-starter with an interest in Sea Grant’s marine science, education and public engagement mission, and the ability to manage multiple projects from start through completion.

While based on the OSU campus in Corvallis, the successful candidate will travel often to the Oregon coast to shoot and conduct interviews in sometimes challenging settings.

Candidates should be adept with Macintosh computers, and with digital and electronic video editing equipment, including internal and external computer drives, recording devices, NTSC and computer monitors. Professional experience with Apple Final Cut Pro/ Avid Media Composer, Adobe Photoshop, and with DVD authoring software is required.

Position opening: Senior aquarist at HMSC

NEWPORT – Oregon Sea Grant is seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Aquarist position at the Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center in Newport. The application deadline is August 8.

The 12-month, fixed-term appointment requires at least a BS/BA in aquatic biology or a related field and/or 2-3 years professional experience as an aquarist, with demonstrated skills in aquatic animal husbandry, health management  and aquatic marine/freshwater system maintenance.

The senior aquarist works with Sea Grant’s Aquatic Animal Health lead and veterinarian, as well as students and volunteers, to ensure the health and humane handling of the Visitor Center’s aquatic animals. The position is responsible for following accepted protocols for animal collection, display and education plans, managing monitoring and maintenance of the aquarium’s water systems and employing  knowledge of natural history, physiology and ecology of animals in the collection to ensure their  appropriate daily and long term care. The position is also responsible for compliance with federal and international standards for animal care and handling.

Sea Grant seeks new Education Program leader at HMSC

Oregon Sea Grant is seeking applicants for a full-time position to lead marine education and visitor programming at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science center in Newport, on the central Oregon coast.

The position, an annual appointment with reappointment at the discretion of the Sea Grant director, provides leadership, development and management of Sea Grant’s marine education programs and visitor services. The program leader is responsible for the popular HMSC Visitor Center and its bookstore, K-12 education and teacher services, public programming, exhibitry and aquarium support. He or she reports to the Oregon Sea Grant Director and serves on the Sea Grant leadership team.

The new director will replace Nancee Hunter, who is leaving to pursue a doctoral degree.
