CORVALLIS – Oregon Sea Grant is seeking a versatile videographer with TV production-level experience – from scripting to shooting to post-production -  to fill a part-time opening on our small professional communications team.

Oregon Sea Grant produces a variety of video products, from short online features and mobile apps to DVD collections, on a wide range of ocean and coastal science and natural history topics. Our ideal videographer is an independent self-starter with an interest in Sea Grant’s marine science, education and public engagement mission, and the ability to manage multiple projects from start through completion.

While based on the OSU campus in Corvallis, the successful candidate will travel often to the Oregon coast to shoot and conduct interviews in sometimes challenging settings.

Candidates should be adept with Macintosh computers, and with digital and electronic video editing equipment, including internal and external computer drives, recording devices, NTSC and computer monitors. Professional experience with Apple Final Cut Pro/ Avid Media Composer, Adobe Photoshop, and with DVD authoring software is required.

NEWPORT – Oregon Sea Grant is seeking qualified applicants for a Senior Aquarist position at the Hatfield Marine Science Visitor Center in Newport. The application deadline is August 8.

The 12-month, fixed-term appointment requires at least a BS/BA in aquatic biology or a related field and/or 2-3 years professional experience as an aquarist, with demonstrated skills in aquatic animal husbandry, health management  and aquatic marine/freshwater system maintenance.

The senior aquarist works with Sea Grant’s Aquatic Animal Health lead and veterinarian, as well as students and volunteers, to ensure the health and humane handling of the Visitor Center’s aquatic animals. The position is responsible for following accepted protocols for animal collection, display and education plans, managing monitoring and maintenance of the aquarium’s water systems and employing  knowledge of natural history, physiology and ecology of animals in the collection to ensure their  appropriate daily and long term care. The position is also responsible for compliance with federal and international standards for animal care and handling.

Oregon Sea Grant is seeking applicants for a full-time position to lead marine education and visitor programming at OSU’s Hatfield Marine Science center in Newport, on the central Oregon coast.

The position, an annual appointment with reappointment at the discretion of the Sea Grant director, provides leadership, development and management of Sea Grant’s marine education programs and visitor services. The program leader is responsible for the popular HMSC Visitor Center and its bookstore, K-12 education and teacher services, public programming, exhibitry and aquarium support. He or she reports to the Oregon Sea Grant Director and serves on the Sea Grant leadership team.

The new director will replace Nancee Hunter, who is leaving to pursue a doctoral degree.

Oregon Sea Grant is expanding its search for qualified applicants for a new Strategic Partnerships and Innovation Leader position to include candidates from around the US.

The new position is a full-time (1.0 FTE), 12-month, fixed-term appointment. The successful candidate will develop and lead Oregon Sea Grant’s co competitive research, strategic partnerships and innovation portfolio, including managing our biennial marine research grant competition, cultivating partnership opportunities and nurturing relationships for program development, growth and funding.

Candidates should have a PhD with 3 years minimum successful experience in a similar position (or Masters with at least 7 years of experience in program development in the aquatic sciences or policy arena) with a background emphasis in marine science, aquatic environmental science or marine policy or socioeconomics, ora  related field. Candidates should demonstrate:

• Strong working knowledge of university research and scholarship
• Proven ability to actively seek out opportunities for investment, revenue generation and strategic partnerships
• Proven track record of writing successful multi-partner grant proposals of large proportion

The new position will be based in the Oregon Sea Grant office on the campus of Oregon State University, in Corvallis.

Oregon Sea Grant invites applications for the position of Extension Program Leader, an administrative faculty appointment to lead an innovative program and team of Sea Grant Extension faculty and staff located on the Oregon State University campus, in offices along the Oregon coast, at the state capital, and the metro/Columbia River area.

This position supervises approximately 20 Extension agents, specialists and professional faculty who engage with and address stakeholder and community issues. The successful applicant will provide leadership, vision, focus and development for the Oregon Sea Grant Extension program to foster statewide partnerships with coastal stakeholders and across institutions and to work with Sea Grant leadership on program development, new initiatives and proposals to grow the program.

The successful applicant will show evidence of a deep commitment to collaborative work and engage with other institutions, agencies, and Sea Grant programs regionally and nationally to develop and sustain effective marine extension programming, networks and relationships.

A PhD degree or equivalent professional experience and a record of excellence in outreach leadership and management in marine, coastal, natural resources or a related field are required. Strong listening, writing and speaking skills, knowledge of Sea Grant, ocean issues and coastal resources, and experience with proposal writing are preferred. We seek someone with a proven commitment to diversity and team building, and to working productively with diverse sets of stakeholders.

NOAA’s National Sea Grant College Program is advertising for a Social Scientist/Program Officer to work in the Silver Spring, MD, headquarters office. The position will serve as both a Program Officer and the National Sea Grant Social Science Specialist. The application deadline is Nov. 30.

The National Sea Grant College Program is NOAA’s primary university-based program in support of coastal resource use and conservation.  The national office oversees 32 university-based Sea Grant programs that work locally and regionally to conduct  scientific research, education, training, and outreach projects designed to foster science-based decisions about the use and conservation of our aquatic resources.

Oregon Sea Grant is advertising a new professional faculty position to coordinate K-12 marine education programs at the Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, on the central Oregon Coast. The person hired will manage a team of marine educators, coordinate k-12 classroom instruction at the HMSC visitor center, and work with faculty to design, promote, implement, and evaluate the center’s marine education programs. Oregon State University is seeking qualified applicants to lead the Oregon Sea Grant program following the retirement of Dr. Robert Malouf, who will have served as program director for 17 years.

Oregon Sea Grant, founded in 1968 and based at OSU, supports research, education and public outreach to help people understand, responsibly interact with, and conserve ocean and coastal resources and communities. Oregon Sea Grant is among the top programs within the network of 32 Sea Grant College Programs, organized under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The director provides overall leadership for Oregon Sea Grant, oversees a total annual budget of approximately $5M, and manages approximately 60 staff and faculty who carry out research, administrative, communication and outreach functions. He/she reports to the Vice President for Research at Oregon State University

To qualify for the position, an applicant must hold a terminal degree with professional experience and a record of excellence in research/ scholarship, policy, and/or management in marine or coastal science, natural resources, or a related field. Strong listening, writing and speaking skills, a record of innovative leadership and problem solving, and knowledge of ocean issues and coastal resources are required. Other requirements include experience managing research programs or large projects, a proven commitment to diversity and team building, and experience working productively with diverse sets of stakeholders.

Applicants with a PhD in a natural or social science or JD or MPA/MPP are preferred, as are those with significant experience with natural resource issues. Preference will be given to candidates with a demonstrated commitment to the Land Grant/Sea Grant concept of research, education, and outreach/extension. The university is seeking applicants whose records would be sufficient for appointment to the rank of full professor in an OSU academic unit. Prior experience working with NOAA/Sea Grant or other marine/natural resource organizations is desirable. Women and members of historically underrepresented groups are encouraged to apply.
