Week 1 – 2020 Fortune Best Companies to Work For!

It can be hard for some people and myself included to find companies to work for that provide a feeling of belongingness and inclusion across all levels of employment. One recurring theme that is highlighted within the majority of the top 100 companies in the “2020 Fortune Best Companies to Work For” is a focus on HR management, more specifically in regard to the people that make-up the companies. The week 1 online lectures break down the importance of HR management and why it matters from a company perspective. It should be no surprise that the employees of a company have a critical impact on the effectiveness, efficiency, and overall functionality of the company as a whole. One of the underlying responsibilities of an HR manager is to provide organization and structure tailored to the employees with the intent of allowing people to work at their full potential benefiting the competitiveness and significance of the company. I welcome you to look through some of the examples provided below that depict a few of the top 100 best companies to work for in hopes of providing you with a deeper insight on why these companies are so great to work for.

Marriott International’s HR practices focus on prioritizing employee development, inclusion, as well as balance in work-life. Power Home Remodeling is another great company that ensures the involvement and skill development of their employees. According to the Trust Index survey taken by the employees who work at Power Home Remodeling, the common words used to describe the company are “Culture, Everyone, and People.” HR practices are “designed to ensure that every Power person has the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in their own way.” This is essential to foster a feeling of belongingness and allow employees to make a strong impact on the company’s goals and initiatives”.

At Comcast NBCUniversal, HR practices by fostering a workplace culture rooted in inclusivity, innovation, and employee empowerment. As noted in their website, “We seek to foster a workplace that reflects and supports our greatest strength – our diverse, talented workforce.” Employees are supported with strong training programs, mentorship opportunities, and access to resources that encourage professional and personal growth.

As expressed in the examples above, these companies along with many others discussed in the 2020 Fortune best Companies to Work For tell us the importance of people. The HR management for these companies want their employees to grow and prosper by ensuring they have all the necessary tools and skills needed to be successful. The kind of manager I would like to be is someone who inspires trust, fosters open communication, and empowers team members to reach their full potential. I want to ensure that all team members voices are heard and supported by creating an inclusive and collaborative work environment. Aspects of a manager’s job I think may pose challenges might include managing conflict and keeping employees motivated and engaged through challenging times. A manger must be able to address conflict effectively in a fair manner to keep disputes within the team from creating tension between team members. A manager must also recognize when employees’ needs out-weigh their work and must make accommodations towards their needs to continue to establish a healthy work place.
