Hatfield Marine Science Center…

We had a great day on the coast Saturday. We visited the Hatfield Marine Science Center. We toured all the great displays and tanks; got to watch them feed an octopus AND build underwater ROVs (Remotely Operated Vehicles). The Science Center was was really cool and the ROV’s were AWESOME!!! After our visit at the science center we went to the beach and played in the sand a while before heading back to campus.

The sign says it all...

Great time at the "touching" pools shaking hands with friends and anemones

Lots of interactive displays full of great information.

Other displays has a different approach to "interactive"...

Then we were off to the lab to build the ROVs... the first phase is planning

MORE planning...

Finally a plan emerges...

Next we enter the construction phase

The shin bone connected to the.... er, a... you get the point

Beginning to take shape!

Are we ready to head to the dock???

Final check list before heading into the salty depths.

Thar she goes!!!

Searching the depths for new discoveries

Captian, we found something... not sure what it is, but we retrieved it succesfully!

Another launch...

and another...

and another..

and another!

Back to dry-dock for a tune up

and adjustments

maybe even some redesign...

Spoon dead ahead.... ready retrieval mechanism mate

One of the many succesful designs and a HAPPY ROV crew!!

Octopus feeding time...

Close up and personal!

Next we're off to the beach.

for some fun and beach gymnastics!

Hi folks, we're having a blast

The Science Behind Queso Fresco

We got to be food scientists, making cheese in OSU’s food pilot plant. Dr. Lisbeth Goddik and her students explained the background of cheese making, which started thousands of years ago when people curdled milk in the stomachs of young animals (yum)! We made Queso Fresco, which is a soft cheese, and only takes about an hour to make. First we boiled milk, then added rennet (an enzyme), and waited for the magic chemistry to kick in. After squeezing out the whey, and doing some cutting, we sampled our homemade cheese.

The "Pilot Plant" set up and ready for cheese making

So this is the curds and whey that Little Miss Muffet sat on her tuffet eating...

Wonder if that thing with the wheel is a tuffet?

Separating the whey from the curds

No Whey!!!!

Cheesy smiles for the final product... YUM YUM!

Answering those deep questions…

  • Ever wonder how scientists and engineers capture gas?
  • Do you think soil is alive?
  • How can we prove that yeast are alive?
  • What’s the inside of the locker room really look like? (HUH???)
  • Today campers were faced these and many other puzzling questions. I the engineering time campers looked in to how to use gasses to propel a car, and in the science lab they pondered how to determine if something is alive or not. After getting their minds exercised, we were all treated to a tour of Gill Coliseum and Reser Stadium.

Getting pumped up with the POD before heading off to class..

    Capturing gasses for CO2 cars

Gazette Times reporter 'gettin' the story' from the campers

Pondering the question "Is soil alive?"

Setting up an experiment to determine if yeast is alive

    Checking out Gill Coliseum

So THIS is what the inside of a locker room looks like...

Cheering for the home team... GO BEAVS!!!
