Hatfield Marine Science Center

Saturday we all loaded up on the school bus and headed off to Newport where we visited the Hatfield Marine Science Center, then had some fun time at the beach.  At the science center we had a class in “animal adaptations” and got to see and handle a bunch of interesting critters from the tide pools along the Oregon coast.  We also got to tour the science center and see all the cool displays about the ocean and were able to touch more tide pool critters in the touch tank.

Up close and personal with critters in the tidepools!

In the Animal Adaptations class we got to handle crabs, sea stars and urchins and other cool marine life.

Between classes and touring the Hatfield Marine Science Center we enjoyed great weather while having lunch.

    Hi Hailey,
Those reptiles looked awsome. I would have liked to hold all of them. I painted your room pink and pale blue (just kidding). Miss you. Love, Mom

    Hi Elora,

    Hey Kyle,
I love the photos! Abby is at Cascade right now, where the weather is in the upper 70′s. Not like 108′ when you were there last year, huh? Good thing, she would melt in that heat! Grandma and Grandpa got home safely last night from Lake Roosevelt and Grand Cooley Dam. They said that Shasta was more fun (I think it’s because of us!) I had a meeting last night, but I think dad and I are going out to dinner tonight after Zumba (and a shower). Emily misses you :o ) I’ve been running a lot getting ready for Hood To Coast. The weather has been perfect! Don’t forget we’re going to the lake on Sat with the Hess’. You can show off for them! Love you TONS! Have a great last couple of days…mom and dad

Having fun, miss you. We’re having an egg-drop competition this afternoon, five stories!!! Should be fun, but not much to build with, so we’ll have to have lots of air resistance. looking forward to seeing you Friday!!!

Ian C, re: 5 story egg drop
On August 22 1994 David Donoghue threw an egg out of a helicopter onto a golf course in the UK, from a height of 700 feet. Apparently the trick was to get the egg moving forward at the same speed it’s falling, then have it land on a grassy slope. Looks like it worked as he now has the record for the longest egg drop without breaking in the world.”

I couldn’t find the world record for the standard school egg drop, where you wrap an egg in materials, then drop it from a building but apparently it is about 100 feet. Good luck!

That’s awesome!!! most likely, no one’s will work that well, but who knows! We had 2 computer classes today, but this is the last one for the camp. I just got that letter you sent me. That may be a record for shortest intercontinental move. 2 Days!!! Had she even started teaching yet? I can be on until 3:15, so you could get 1 more post on that I’ll see.

i was the bravest in my group because i wanted to hold everything. my favorite creature was the sea star because if it lost an arm another would grow back and the arm would grow a new body.

We went to the Hatfield Marine Science Center. It was really fun. I am in one of the pictures with me holding a ghost shrimp. I called it the “Go Go Shrimp” because they always are going or moving. We got to hold a Sea anemone. It was cool.

This was so fun! Looking at all of the different animals was really cool. Especialy because we got to pet to them and all that. When I was petting one of the \sea stars\ (I just call em starfish but whatever!) it like stuck to my finger and it wouldnt get off me and the person watching that tank had to help me pry it off.:P It was really cool!!We also got to watch a video about Octopus, squid, and somethin else that I can’t remember the name of. ;p it was really interesting. There was a few type of squids (I think it was squid…) that could change colors! it was epic :D .
Mom, Anne, and Greg. I miss you guys so much!!! Greg I’ll see you on friday and mom and anne just blog back to me…pleaseeee!!!:)
    xoxo,
