This week we learned a lot about microbes and how they can affect the body. The microbes that live in our guts are important for normal functioning and can cause problems should their population numbers become out of whack with another bacterial species. I think there are many different ways to change the gut microbial community and they can be related to health and disease free states in many ways.

Some of the different ways I think you can change your microbial community in the gut is through different lifestyle changes. Healthier eating I think could change the population because I think different microbes may eat different diets and the diets that we eat may change the population due to this. I think this would be a beneficial changes as eating healthier can affect your health positively. On the other hand taking antibiotics can be detrimental to the gut microbial community because antibiotics wipe everything out not just the bad stuff. This may be a neutral or detrimental health impact because it could get rid of the bad bacteria that were causing problems but it could also wipe out the good bacteria meaning that you could get sick because of the decrease in microbes in the body. Taking probiotics and prebiotics could help change the population by putting different bacteria into the gut and this could be a beneficial because it could influence the microbes that live in your gut and make up your microbial community.

Besides there being things you can do involving eating there are other ways to influence the microbial community in your body. Some of these things being you could play with animals, reduce your overall stress levels, and getting dirty by playing outside. By playing with animals you may acquire microbes from the animal which influences what microbes you have, this could be beneficial health wise but it could also be neutral. To reduce your overall stress you could take up things like yoga and meditation to reduce the stress, overall this would be beneficial to your health. One last thing you could do is to play outside in to gain more microbes from the environment and could be beneficial or detrimental to your health because of the types of microbes that are picked up in the environment.

All these methods could change the population of microbes in the gut because of how it changes the environment of the gut. Stress leads to reduced inflammation and problems in the body which can make the microbial population change. Playing outside and with dogs can change the population of microbes that are living in the gut because of acquisition from outside sources. I think overall changes in microbial communities come from the environment and changes that are made in people lives. The populations of microbes change in relation to how the environment in which they live changes as well.
