Find out about the Weight Watchers program and how OSU employees can participate for free!
(Article by Danielle McNaughton, Dietetics Senior)
We have certainly all heard of Weight Watchers or seen the frozen prepared meals in the grocery store, but what exactly is it? Weight Watchers is built on a points system accompanied by weekly group meetings, weigh-ins, recipe suggestions and behavioral counseling. A 2011 study found it was the most effective program for helping dieters lose weight. In 2012 it ranked #1 Best Weight-Loss Diet and Easiest Plan to Follow by U.S. News & World Report.
OSU’s Michelle Mahana has been a member for almost two years with great success. She says “Weight Watchers works because it’s a reminder of how to eat and exercise as we know we should. The program is very supportive.” While sitting in on last week’s meeting and chatting with the instructor and some of the members, I got the sense that WW becomes a way of life rather than a diet; it’s about portion control, no foods are excluded. Confidential weekly weigh-ins are optional and really there to help you reach your personal goals. Meetings have a different topic each week such as “build a smarter salad,” but are primarily there for members to share obstacles and strategies –an encouraging environment.
