As commencement comes nearer and nearer, we know everybody in the OSU community has this year’s commencement speaker – First Lady Michelle Obama – on their minds. So we at Be Well were wondering how our community feels about her endorsement of Disney’s ban on junk food advertisements in kids’ programming.
This announcement comes right after New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s proposal to ban large sugary drinks in an effort to influence consumer behavior.
Of Disney’s move to ban junk food advertising to kids, Michelle Obama has said, “This new initiative is truly a game changer for the health of our children…So, for years, people told us that no matter what we did to get our kids to eat well and exercise, we would never solve our childhood obesity crisis until companies changed the way that they sell food to our children. We all know the conventional wisdom about that …. Today, Disney has turned that conventional wisdom on its head.” (LA Times)
That’s our 2012 commencement speaker’s take on this issue. What’s yours?
