Behaviors and Compensation
As I am graduating this year, there were many factors that went into which jobs/companies to pursue and compensation was one of those significant factors. I am currently committed to Hoffman Construction. I knew that in the industry of construction management, the more employees and projects that they handle, the more likely the higher the compensation I’d be entitled to. For the job title of Project Engineer, the offer I received was competitive and higher than the averages seen online as well as that being offered by other companies in the area. This extrinsic reward led me to accept the job offer. Prior to accepting their offer, I was not sure about accepting a salary-exempt position. I have always been in an hourly wage non-exempt position in the previous jobs that I have had, which caused anxiety relating to how many hours I will work and if I feel I will be paid fairly. I am still not sure yet how exactly I am going to feel once I finally start at the position. My main argument that kept me from accepting the offer right away was “if I work more than 40hrs(a typical work week), I am not getting overtime time or any more compensation than what I already am getting”. This is in contrast to my previous jobs as I knew that my time over 40 hours would bring in more money which would motivate me to continue working as 1.5x for overtime is a significant motivator. I hope that the extrinsic rewards will be enough to keep going at the company that I will start soon. The intrinsic motivation would be that I am a fresh grad getting the title of project engineer, which psychologically motivates me and helps build my professional and social connections.
