Week 2 – Experiences with Discrimination
Ashley He
This question is a difficult one, as it concerns my values as well as the actions of my favorite company. If a news article came out reporting that my favorite company was faced with a lawsuit regarding discrimination against individuals that I associate with, I would choose to place my values above the company, thus prioritizing myself and what I believe in. Therefore, the outstanding claims of discrimination would tremendously alter the way I feel about the company. I would now view the organization in a negative light and not want to support that company anymore. This is because the item that I associate with is being discriminated against, thus making me feel as if the company is discriminating against me as well. Ultimately, this would drown out my desirability to purchase from this organization.
Due to our values not matching up, it would definitely affect my decision in applying to work for that company in the future. I would not actively want to work for this company due to the discrimination that I felt. This could potentially change, as the company could change for the better in the future. If the company admits that they messed up and took actions towards educating themselves and their employees as well as contribute community hours or funds towards an organization that supports the group that was discriminated by the company, then I would reconsider. Although this would still be a difficult decision, if the organization does truly show dedication towards change, then I could give the company another chance.
