Week 5 Blog Post: Typical vs. Maximal Performance Week 5

Jacob Tresser

If I was the business owner and had to choose between Avery and Jaime, I would take in many factors before making my final decision. In the end I would pick Jaime, due to the consistent work that they do day-in and day-out. If I need work materials always done and submitted at the exact time, when they are needed most, choosing Jaime over Avery makes the most sense.  If I am running a business, I cannot choose a potential employee if they don’t lack the critical skills of consistency of work, and even with a lower upper-limit, you are able to get the most out of Jaime over avery, due to consistency. When making this decision, I came up with a few business scenarios in which I put each employee in the same scenario and assume what will happen with someone who is constant, and a person with amazing results but who  is considered a slacker overall. The scenario that came to mind was tax season and I need either of these employees to make sure everything is on time and accurate by the april 15 deadline. If we choose Jaime, I am actually confident that they will turn in this critical assignment on time and it will be accurate, while I might get it done faster with Avery, but if they decide to wait a little bit and be a slacker, it could ruin the business. A job in which it is better to hire Avery with higher potential, would come from a job like a creative role, in which thinking outside the box is necessary like problem solving. The ability to be a high potential would come up with the fantastic ideas that they might produce. A job in which I would want to hire Jaime, is a job in which documents must be submitted on time. An example I can think of is accountant. When you go to an accountant you are counting on them to be consistent and even if they don’t go above and beyond, having someone you can count on in this case is the most important factor before hiring!
